Abstract

The introduction of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) in India by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2019 marked a pivotal shift in the paradigm of undergraduate medical training. This transition from a time-based curriculum to an outcome-oriented framework underscores a commitment to producing competent medical graduates equipped to address contemporary health challenges. This article critically assesses the iterative revisions of the CBME framework from its inception in 2019 to the latest updates in 2024, emphasizing the implications for medical students, educators, and the healthcare system at large.

By focusing on learner-centric, patient-centered approaches, CBME aims to enhance the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills and dispositions necessary for effective medical practice. The curriculum reforms prioritize comprehensive learning, encompassing cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains to ensure graduates are capable of performing essential functions in medical care and community health. Additionally, it fosters a culture of research and scholarly pursuit, preparing students for evidence-based practice and lifelong learning.

Through a detailed examination of implementation strategies, feedback mechanisms, and performance outcomes, this review elucidates the profound significance of these curricular advancements in reshaping medical education in India. The findings advocate for ongoing refinement and adaptation of the curriculum to meet the evolving needs of health care, ultimately striving towards the realization of Health for All.
